Locate the center of the popping wood panel that is directly above the found floor joist.

One of the main causes of cracking and popping noises that seem to occur randomly in a house mainly deep within the walls floors and ceilings is known as thermal expansion.
Then tightly refasten.
Cut out a square surrounding the problem zone from joist center to joist center or remove an entire 4 foot by 8 foot sheet of subflooring.
Sometimes a nail that misses a joist will rub on the framing below as the floor deflects.
Many squeaking and popping noises originate from the subfloor system below the floor.
Drill a hole that is smaller than a 10 penny finish nail into the panel s center point with a power drill.
Sometimes you might walk across your floors and hear a popping or creaking noise.
Start by locating the specific wood floor panel that is popping by walking across it slowly then mark the spot with masking tape.
If this is the case remove the nail.
Some of the most common causes of a squeaky floor originating from the subfloor system include poorly nailed subfloor sheathing missing joist hangers missing nails or nails that just miss the joist improperly installed subfloor sheathing improper.
If you find the subfloor material is loose squirt some subfloor adhesive or construction adhesive between the joist and the underside of the loose subfloor panel.
You can also spot the floor joists by looking for putty covered top nails.
If your wood floor is already down this might mean you have to pull up the section that squeaks to repair the subfloor and then put down a new section of flooring.
