Varnish is used to protect and add a shiny finish to wooden surfaces. When the solvent has evaporated the finish will still be sticky. So light traffic and no heavy items should be placed on the flooring. The second stage of drying is cross linking where the molecules react in the presence of oxygen to bond with one another.

Letting the lacquer there won t make it dry naturally. Polyurethane is better known as varnish. The finish was oil based polyurethane duraseal. Over time the finish of the varnish can start to peel become white and even feel tacky.

Now you can let it dry and apply the polyurethane. If the stain is still sticky after 12 hours you may have to remove it. The move will leave only the penetrated stain. That will take up to 30 days to do so underneath the seal coat and poly coatings.

You can then apply your polyurethane. It will seal and dry quickly. Cross linking is what makes polyurethane finishes more durable than other finishes. To get rid of the excess stain apply another coat and let it soak for some minute then wipe the surface.

Applied cabothane water borne semi gloss polyurethane to pine floors. We just had our floors sanded and refinished and they still feel tacky after 12 days.
